Art, comics, graphic design and web development by the artist: Matthew Taylor
Most of my drawings are done with charcoal but not the traditional willow charcoal sticks; I prefer a more compressed charcoal pencil. By using charcoal in a pencil format you can achieve a higher level of detail and still keep that sooty feel plus it’s also far less messy.
There is also white charcoal available… I’m not sure if it’s really charcoal but it certainly feels like the same texture. White charcoal is nice and dry which makes it easy to rub out later, not like white pencils that are waxy. I like to use black and white charcoal on a variety of coloured papers, to get a nice depth in my drawing.

'The portrait is one of the most curious art forms. It demands special qualities in the artist, and an almost total kinship with the model.' - Henri Matisse
